A cantora Adele, de 23 anos, confirmou as expectativas e conquistou todos os prêmios aos quais foi indicada após arrasar nas listas de sucessos com "Rolling in the Deep". Essa música foi nomeada melhor canção e melhor letra de 2011 e o disco "21", o segundo da carreira, foi reconhecido como melhor álbum.

Seria preciso remontar a 2007 para encontrar um domínio tão arrasador de um artista nos Grammy. Naquela ocasião, a glória foi para Dixie Chicks com seu "Not Ready To Make Nice", incluída no álbum country "Taking the Long Way". Adele levou, além disso, outros três fonógrafos dourados pela melhor atuação solo em pop com "Someone Like You", melhor álbum vocal pop com "21", e melhor vídeo musical de curta duração ("Rolling in the Deep").

Breve nas palavras ao receber os prêmios, Adele não pôde evitar soluçar nervosa e se lembrar da mãe, dos amigos e inclusive dos médicos que a operaram há cinco meses das cordas vogais, depois que teve que suspender sua turnê americana por problemas de saúde. "Este disco é inspirado em uma relação miserável e este foi um ano que mudou minha vida", admitiu a britânica.

Os Grammys confirmaram o nascimento de uma nova diva da canção ao mesmo tempo em que disseram adeus a outra que reinou nos anos 80 e 90, Whitney Houston, cuja lembrança serviu para abrir a festa no Staples Center. O mestre de cerimônias, o rapper LL Cool J, pediu uma oração em memória da cantora antes de abrir passagem para um vídeo no qual Whitney interpretava a música que a tornou mundialmente famosa, "I Will Always Love You", a mesma canção que posteriormente Jennifer Hudson cantou e que foi o momento central da homenagem.

Whitney Houston morreu no sábado em um hotel de Los Angeles com apenas 48 anos de idade, por causas que ainda estão sendo investigadas. Além de Adele e Whitney Houston, a festa teve entre seus protagonistas a banda Foo Fighters, que conseguiram cinco prêmios e dominaram nas categorias de rock; Kanye West, que obteve quatro fonógrafos em rap e não assistiu à cerimônia, e o DJ Skrillex, que ficou com três prêmios de música dance.
